Save Wildwalk!![]()
Wildwalk, Bristol's unique natural history tourist attraction and educational facility, part of the At-Bristol complex, is due to close in April, due to lack of funding. We, the undersigned, believe that this would be a terrible loss of a valuable resource, not only for Bristol, but for the wider population of the UK; the 500,000 visitors per year, including residents, tourists and schoolchildren who benefit from visiting At-Bristol every year. We believe that at a time when awareness of our impact on the natural environment is growing, facilities like this should not only be treasured but protected. We ask that the Secretaries of State from the relevant Departments in the Government, namely Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State for Culture, Rt. Hon Alan Johnson, Secretary of State for Education, and Alistair Darling, Secretary of State for the Department of Trade and Industry (with its responsibility for Science), take urgent action to prevent this closure. Museums in England are wholly subsidised by the Government, but 'Science Centres' are not. We ask that Wildwalk is: * either given the status of a Natural History Museum, and subsidised as such, * or that the Government provides the same support and funding for Science Centres in England that those in Wales and Scotland currently receive, which enable centres such as Techniquest in Cardiff to operate successfully. We also ask that: * Bristol City Council and the South West Regional Development Agency continue to support Wildwalk financially so it can remain open in the short term; * the Board of Wildwalk consider keeping Wildwalk open, whilst a significant level of public support is gathered, thus giving time for National Government to consider this request.
